TIME’s decision to list Gurmehar Kaur as free speech warrior among NextGen Leaders is ludicrous

Earlier in this month, TIME magazine listed Gurmehar Kaur as “free speech warrior” and it was just like the United Nations’ tweet inviting Gurmeet Ram Rahim and his daughter to support the world toilet day.

Gurmehar Kaur is currently studying English Literature at Delhi University’s Lady Shri Ram College for Women. She made a splash in the headlines this year when she started speaking against ABVP students’ organization and released her placard holding video as part of Ram Subramanian’s Profile for Peace campaign. Like a typical libtard, she came out in support of Communist students’ leaders like Shehla Rashid and Umar Khalid. These two often talk about breaking Indian into pieces.

Kaur’s father was an army man, martyred in 1999 during an encounter with terrorists in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. But, in her video released during February, she blamed the war for her father’s death instead of Pakistan, the country that trains terrorists to attack India. This is what made her a hero for every leftist journalist and liberal intellectual in India. Kaur also showed she’s against free speech recently by threatening Facebook page admins who had just posted memes featuring Kaur’s images. She urged her followers to report Facebook pages that write against her.

Now, Time Magazine has honored to add her to the list of top ten next generation leaders from around the world. This sounds insanely ridiculous because many Indians disagree with Kaur’s arguments regarding keeping Pakistan out of the debate. Pakistan is often referred as a notorious country that did not even hesitate to offer shelter to Osama Bin Laden.

How and why in the world did Time Magazine’s editorial team decide to choose Kaur as free speech warrior when she cannot even tolerate Facebook posts written against her ideology? She recently threatened young boys for making memes!!! Is she a free speech warrior?

Another essential point to be considered is that Gurmehar Kaur’s mentor Ram Subramanian, (the person behind her placard holding video) was recently in the limelight due to his racist, regionalist tweets that indirectly abused people from the state(s) of Haryana, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh.

Time’s decision to tag Kaur as “free speech warrior” can be compared with the United Nations’ tweet inviting Gurmeet Ram Rahim and his daughter to support the world toilet day. UN’s team responsible for sending out invitations was probably not aware that Gurmeet Ram Rahim and his daughter are in jail, serving sentences for various crimes. The UN, as well as Time Magazine, both ignored the reality and failed to check facts. Perhaps, they were misguided by someone.

National politics and not students’ welfare

Most of the students’ organizations in India are linked with political parties. Thus, student leaders in India are more interested in national politics than students’ welfare. May it be the BJP linked ABVP, Congress linked- NSUI, or Communist Party-linked- SFI, none care about rising school and college fees in the country. Even in spite of the Right to Education, lakhs of kids remain away from schools due to poor financial condition of their family. But, who cares?  Anyways, getting back to the topic, the central point is that Kaur has come out in support of the SFI and opposed ABVP; so, every left-leaning journalist is offering her limelight.

Time’s editorial team from India probably only consists of self-assessed liberal intellectuals. Or, they are ignorant towards reality.  No matter if it’s BBC, DW TV, CNN International, or Washington Post; most of the international news outlets have hired leftist journalists from India as their correspondents. So, most of their reports about Indian issues happen to be one-sided.

Time often creates some controversy. Their editors openly agree that when it comes to choosing the person of the year, they select someone who is newsworthy and not someone who’s praiseworthy. Time’s editorial team must do a fact check and rethink if Kaur is a free speech warrior in reality or is just a political stooge.
