[Story is based on inputs of Koslendradas Shastri, Asstant Professor at Rajashan Sanskrit University who acted the whistle blower in the case.]
Rajasthan’s one and only Sanskrit university’s condition these days is more like a patient who needs medical care in an Intermediate Intensive Care Unit.
Administrative irregularities, misuse of funds, molestation of female students and rivalry between professors are some of the problems that plague the institution that Triveni’s Sant Narayan Das once established with a great vision of bringing the glorious language Sanaskrit back to the vernacular. His efforts by collecting the alms to build this university reflects the highest selfless vision.
Within less than a decade from its establishment (2001), the Jagadguru Ramanandacharya Rajasthan Sanskrit University had managed to create a reputation as one of India’s most reputed and renowned educational institutions for Sanskrit. But today, Rajasthan’s minister for higher education-Kiran Maheshwari and state’s Governor Kalyan Singh are continually receiving complaints about the organization. The number of complaints received must be more than the institute’s current number of students, 275!
Besides making it in the headlines for violating UGC norms while recruiting teachers, the university recently attracted negative light when its associate professor Pramod Kumar Sharma was accused of seeking sexual favors from one of the students. Ironically, the administration initially gave a clean chit to the professor without even listening to the complainant. Thankfully, the girl filed an FIR and investigating officer, Muhana police station’s sub-inspector Hari Singh has assured that university’s clean chit to its professor won’t impact the police investigation. They would investigate the matter along with available evidence like CCTV footage.
VC’s role under the scanner:
The astonishing part is that University’s own VC, Prof. Vinod Sharma is accused of being involved in financial, academic and administrative irregularities.
Before few months, officials as well as some teachers from the concerned university met Governor Kalyan Singh and urged him to form a select committee to investigate administrative irregularities and corruption in various processes under Vinod Sharma’s tenure as the institute’s Vice-Chancellor. They have asked Governor Singh to probe if Sharma’s decisions have led the university to financial losses.
Surprisingly, Junior Associate Prof. Dr. K. Samba Shiva Murty has been appointed as the Registrar, Director of Research Center, Dean for the faculty of education and also the Chief Hostel Warden by the VC. His appointment on several posts has already been challenged in the Rajasthan HC.
University’s examination scam also made it into the headlines last year. The examination controller Dr. Narendra Chaturvedi did expose the corruption and irregularities but has been suspended for speaking the truth since the previous six months.
Reputation has been damaged during the last few years:
Triveni’s Sant Narayan Das had taken considerable efforts and even collected charity from people for the Sanskrit University. Unfortunately, today, people are ruining the same university’s image. Several cases are pending against the institution in various courts, and these are consuming university’s resources.
The financial condition is such that the institution does not have funds to take care of its pension-related liabilities.
Associate Prof. Dr. Rajdhar Mishra was also a part of the delegation that met Rajasthan’s Governor. During the interaction, he pointed out that University’s Vice-Chancellor has failed to create concrete plans for the institute’s future.
Even the 24 crore rupees allotted by the Raje Government for the University’s improvement and repair work have been allegedly misused. The Chief Minister’s Office, the ACB, and Rajbhavan are investigating various corruption matters from the institute.
The university’s condition is a collective concern and can no longer be looked as just the state education department’s responsibility.
